American Airlines Policies

American Airlines has implemented different policies for different services to function efficiently. The guidelines have everything passengers need to know from making reservations to canceling them.

Baggage Policy

Bags Allowed

Passengers could check up to ten bags on American flights if your itinerary is:

  • Transatlantic
  • Transpacific
  • Domestic

Passengers can check up to five bags on American flights if they travel through/to/from

  • Mexico / Caribbean / Central America
  • Brazil
  • South America

Weight and Size of bags

For all destinations, except from/ to New Zealand or Australia, the checked baggage allowance is:

  • Weight:  23 kgs / 50 lbs
  • Dimension: 158 cm / 62 in
  • For Business/First fare class,  free bags weight will e be  32 kgs / 70 lbs & 23 kgs / 50 lbs /  for extra charged baggage.

For all passengers flying to/from New Zealand or Australia:

  • Weight: 32kgs / 70 lbs for free baggage bags & 23 kgs / 50 lbs for extra charged baggage
  • Dimension: 158 cm / 62 in

Cancelation

  • American airlines has 24 free cancelation policy that states passengers can cancel their flights within 24 hours of booking and get a full refund.
  • The cancelation policy varies on the type of fare classes and the time of the ticket bought.
  • Basic economy tickets cannot be canceled as they are non-refundable tickets. To cancel the non-refundable tickets, passengers need to pay $200 as a fee to cancel the domestic flights, and for international flights, it is $750.
  • The refundable can easel canceled, and passengers can receive a partial or full refund.

Rebooking Policy

  • If the airline cancels your flight, then you are eligible to rebook your flight for future dates.
  • Passengers can visit the airline’s official website if he wants to rebook the flight and utilize the travel funds for future bookings. 
  • You can easily rebook your flights through the manage booking option.

Check-in Policy

  • Passengers can check in for their American Airlines flight 24 hours before their scheduled departure.
  • However, the check-in window will close for domestic flights 45 minutes before departure and for international flights 90 minutes before departure time.
  • Passengers can check in via the mobile app, website, or self-service kiosk.

Flight Change

  • Passengers can change their flight within 24 hours of purchase according to the American Airlines change flight policy.
  • American has waived the flight change fee for domestic and international flights.
  • If you hold a refundable ticket, you do not have to pay a change fee.
  • Passengers can also make same-day changes. However, they must pay up to $75 to $150 as a change fee.
  • Passengers can change their flight up to 2 hours before the scheduled departure.

Name Change

  • American Airlines allows minor name changes to unused ticket. It does not allow complete name changes on tickets to any passengers.
  • If you hold a non-refundable ticket, you can not update your name.
  • Minor corrections are only eligible for American Airlines and American Eagle tickets’ itineraries.
